Share of Voice (SOV)
SOV answers one question: Of all the brand mentions an AI gives in this answer space, how many are yours?
It represents Dominance β taking most of the space in the conversation. Where VS is binary-ish ("did you show up"), SOV is comparative ("how loud are you vs the field").
Formula
SOV = Frequency Γ Strength Γ Comparative Presence
- Frequency β total number of times the brand is mentioned across all LLM runs in the period.
- Strength β weighting for how the brand is mentioned. A named, linked, cited mention counts more than a passing reference. Citations are weighted at 50% of full mentions (they signal relevance but not direct recommendation).
- Comparative Presence β your mention count divided by the total mention count for the full competitor set on the same prompts.
The output is a 0β100% share.
How to read it
- You + your tracked competitors should sum close to 100% on each prompt. If they don't, the rest of the share is going to untracked brands β a signal to add them as competitors so the chart reflects reality.
- A SOV of 30% with 3 competitors is parity. A SOV of 30% with 10 competitors is leadership.
- SOV trends matter more than absolute numbers. A steady climb against the same competitor set is the cleanest growth signal.
Why SOV β VS
You can have high VS but low SOV: you appear in many answers, but each time the AI also lists 4 competitors more prominently. The fix is content depth and authoritative third-party coverage β not more keywords.
You can also have low VS but high SOV: you only show up in a handful of niche prompts, but when you do, you own them. The fix is broadening prompt scope, not adding content.
Stealth mode
SOV is one of the sensitive metrics hidden by default under Stealth mode (alongside VS, TMR and SV). Toggle it off in the dashboard header to reveal absolute values.
Pairs with
- VS β the inclusion gate. SOV is only meaningful on prompts where VS > 0.
- TMR β measures position within an answer; SOV measures volume across answers.
