Why citations and mentions are tracked separately, and why citations carry roughly half the weight.

    Citations vs mentions

When an AI engine talks about your brand, it can do so in two distinct ways:

    • A mention β€” your brand name appears in the answer text itself. The user sees your name.
    • A citation β€” your domain appears in the source list backing the answer. The user sees a link.

Both matter, but they don't matter equally. GeoBubbles tracks them as separate signals and combines them with different weights into your visibility metrics.

    Why the distinction matters

A mention is a direct recommendation: the AI named you as part of the answer. The user reads "you should look at GeoBubbles for X" and your brand registers immediately, whether or not they click anything.

A citation is attribution: the AI used your content as a source but didn't necessarily name you. The user sees a link in the source list. They might click it (and discover you), or they might not.

Mentions drive top-of-funnel awareness; citations drive trust and click-through. You generally want both.

    How they're weighted

In the composite metrics (VS, SOV, AIS), citations are weighted at roughly 50% of a mention. That weighting reflects empirical click and brand-recall data:

    • A user who reads your name in the answer is far more likely to remember the brand than a user who only sees your domain in a sources panel.
    • A citation without a mention is still meaningful β€” it means the AI trusts your content β€” but the brand-recall lift is smaller.
    • A prompt where you're both mentioned and cited is the strongest possible signal and is rewarded accordingly.

This is why a brand can have many citations from the Google AI surfaces yet still post a modest VS β€” citations alone don't pull the score up to where steady mentions would.

    Which surfaces produce which signals

If your strategy depends heavily on citation share, the Google AI surfaces are where you'll see the most movement. If it depends on direct mentions, the conversational chat surfaces matter more.

    Reading the dashboard

On most charts, mentions and citations are shown as separate series so you can see them moving independently. Where a single composite metric is shown (e.g. VS), the underlying calculation already applies the citation weighting β€” you don't need to do the math yourself.
